Digital Cut Files are cute and all...but how do I use them? One of the most popular uses of digital cut files (also commonly just called SVG's) by crafters and makers is to cut designs on their cutting machines. Some popular cutting machines are Cricut, Silhouette, SCAL, Graphtec and Roland. My digital cut files are organized by layer (where appropriate) to make cutting of different colours easy.
These designs can be used to cut HTV (heat transfer vinyl) for application on garments like t-shirts and hoodies. As every crafter knows, designs must first be "mirrored" or flipped horizontally before you cut on HTV. We cut from the backside of HTV, so the design must be reversed first. Cut the same design from removable vinyl and it's ready to apply to your wall as instant art. Cut the design from permanent vinyl and it is a decal that will adhere to your car window, mugs, water bottles, computers or any other indoor or outdoor smooth surface. How about using the design as a stencil. Yes, a stencil! Tape or apply the stencil to your wood or other background and dab away. |
What formats are includedMy designs include these formats: EPS, SVG, PNG, DXF, JPG. Don't know what means? No worries.
If you use a cutting machine like Cricut or Silhouette, then you probably are interested in SVG (scalable vector graphic) files. The basic (free) version of Silhouette only opens JPG and PNG format and you'll then need to trace the design. That's reason enough to upgrade to a higher version if you ask me. Personally, I use the Business Edition and it's pretty slick. Want to just print the graphic in a project? Then JPG works just fine. Once you are familiar with your computer software that uses digital designs, you'll soon learn which formats work best for you. |
